I
was born at Mount Sinai Hospital in Chicago on October 16, 1956. I was
raised in the 50th Ward at 2801 W. Estes, and have lived in
Chicago all of my life. My late father Lester was an attorney, and my
mother Gail, nee Pitluk (www.gailshapiro.net)
is an artist. My sisters Sharon and Maura are attorneys. Sharon worked
in the Public Defender’s Office and created the Clerk’s Office of
Expedited Child Support as the first Director when she was appointed by
then Chief Judge Harry Comerford. We all attended Stephen Decatur and
Daniel Boone Elementary Schools and Mather High School. I graduated from
Northwestern University Division of Continuing Education in 1980 where I
obtained a Baccalaureate degree in Psychology and Communication in 1980,
and then attended University of Illinois at Chicago where I obtained my
Master’s Degree in Communication/Theatre in 1985. I have done continuing
education in several areas, and began work on a Doctoral degree in
Public Policy Analysis in 1989.
I have worked for Cook County for thirty two years, as of August 9th 2008. From 1976 through 1979 I worked in the Recorder of Deeds Office. From 1979 through 1984 I worked in the Sheriff’s Office, and since 1984 I have worked in the Adult Probation Department where I now work in the Investigations Unit.
I was elected in February of this year to be the 46th Ward GOP Committeeman, and am working on building a strong organization (www.46thwardgop.com). Beside working for Cook County, I helped produce circuses for the Shrine, various state fairs and Summerfest in Milwaukee, Wisconsin over a fifteen year period, doing all of the public relations and promotion. I have been teaching Public Speaking at Triton College since 2000, am President of International Police Association, Region 4-Chicago since 2003, belong to numerous police organizations, Route 66 Illinois Association of Illinois, and am a proud member of ABATE : A Brotherhood Aimed Towards Education, which champions the rights of motorcyclists. I am on the Advisory Board of Northwestern Business College for the Law Enforcement Curriculum and am active in the CAPS programs in my area. I also speak several languages, including Spanish, for which I receive a monthly stipend. I believe that “if you are not part of the solution, then you are a part of the problem”.
I know that I have much to offer and look forward to serving the citizens of Cook County as Circuit Court Clerk. I have the skills, experience, ability and knowledge to do the job in a manner which will restore pride and efficiency to that office. I will lead by example and be a clarion call for reform in Cook County.
